708 Elegant Guard's Silk Embroidered Bai Minority Hat
Elegant Guard’s Silk Embroidered Bai Minority Child’s Hat. An amazing feat of super fine chain stitch and double-needle embroidering on this lovingly created child’s hat. The hat was likely originally modeled after an imperial guardsman’s hat and is created from eight purple silk diamond pieces and eight pentagon-shaped red silk pieces all stitched together; the purple top has faded much more than the red bottom sections which remain bright. The bottom is trimmed with black cotton and the top has a knot with a long-braided queue. All of the embroidered images are loaded with symbolism including pomegranates for fertility, peach for longevity, peony for honor and worldly glory, and coin for wealth; individual sections are backed with hand-woven indigo-dyed cotton; mid-20th century; good condition, except for fading on top; likely from the Bai Minority Dali area of Yunnan Province; 20" circumference.
