Bai Minority Girls Festival Hat; Classic symbolic black cotton hat from the Dali Area of Yunnan Province; Attached ru-yi (“may your wished come true”) shaped crown embroidered with flowers and attached pompoms on hand-made springs (Jung Balls…the Hero’s Courage for protection); two side attached circles with pink peony (wealth and worldly glory); Reverse appliqued image of pomegranate (for fertility) on the back; three base metal Immortal figures on front; soiled pink cotton lining; some soiling of the pink silk brocade base; c 1960s; collected by the late Peter Nelson in late 1980’s; 20” circumference.
